Don’t Forget to Clear an Area Around Your Heat Pump
While we’re busy shoveling out after the big Snow of the Century in the MD Suburbs, don’t forget to clear out an area around your outdoor heat pump or central air conditioning unit. Like everything else, this probably has two feet of snow piled against it. In fact, it’s an ideal place for snow to drift and possibly cover the outdoor compressor unit. This is bad for a number of things:
- it causes your heat pump to work harder and, thus, shortening it’s lifespan or requiring additional maintenance
- the harder it works the more electricity it uses and , thus, causing your utility bill to increase
I’m not a heat pump or heating specialist. I just remember what the specialists tell me. It’s kinda like making sure your water lines to you hose bibs are bled out before the big freezing temperatures set in so you don’t end up with burst pipes and flooded basements.
Here is a short video of the heat pump story (less than a minute)….
